As the second largest airport in Greece, travelers can catch a flight from Heraklion to domestic areas in Greece (including the islands) or head to one of hundreds of cities around the world. Although Heraklion only has one runway, it services over 40 airlines, operates 24-hours a day and sees millions of travelers every year. By the beginning of the tourist season in 2025 a new airport should be ready at a new site -Kastelli. The cost of the project will reach 1 billion euros and will be funded on a concession basis for a period of 35 years. The new airport is expected to cater 5 to 10 million passengers per year replacing the “Nikos Kazantzakis” airport at Heraklion which will cease operations upon the inauguration of the new one at Kastelli.

Today, the airport has many named varieties. It’s also known as Iraklio, Heraclion, Iraklion, and other variations. Heraklion Airport sits 3 miles (4.83km) from the city of Heraklion. It is the largest of the three airports on the island of Crete and is the second largest airport in Greece before Athens.

Heraklion Airport is the second busiest airport in Greece with nearly 8 million passengers.

Heraklion Airport opened in 1939 and is located 5km from downtown.

With an official airport code of HER, Heraklion airport boasts a 2,680-meter runway and close connections to popular tourist destinations such as Malia and Analipsi, resulting in the airport becoming busier over past years, signalling a boost in Crete’s tourism.
